Obesity has reached epic proportions in the U.S., reaching every sector of the population. The National Institute of Health claims that more than half of adults are overweight, with 25% being classed as obese, and 2% morbidly obese (those who are 50 -100% heavier than their recommended weight). At least 97 million Americans are overweight and obese.
Population groupsEvery age group, gender and ethnic group is affected by obesity with the 18 to 29 age group showing the highest increase. African-American women are more overweight than their white counterparts, the reverse trend is happening among men where African-American men are less obese. The western states have the lowest rate of obesity, whereas the south shows the highest and there has been a 67% increase.
Many state that the cause of this epidemic is due to lifestyle and demographics.
Lack of activity is a major cause of obesity. People drive rather than walk, and they watch T.V. rather than exercising after work. Gas is affordable for many Americans, and so many drive everywhere. Many Americans spend their working day behind a desk. With often two household incomes, many eat out more, buyer bigger and faster cars and go on expensive holidays. The fast food industry is growing and with it how it is marketed by advertising and promotions. The percentage of ads promoting candy and fatty foods is high. There seems to be an abundance of food in the U.S. The country produces three times more food than the population can eat. In addition, government subsidies has brought the price of some high sugar foods down. The U.S. is trying to address the obesity problem by encouraging Americans to exercise more and through the 2005 USDA Dietary Guideline for Americans, to eat more healthily. With $117 billion spent annually on obesity-related health care, this health condition is spiraling out of control.
